FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

What is IBCLC certification?

This acronym stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.

These are health professionals who have the necessary knowledge and skills to promote and facilitate breastfeeding. International Board Certified Lactation Consultants work to prevent and solve breastfeeding problems; in general, they encourage a social environment that supports breastfeeding families.

Experience has shown that IBCLC Lactation Consultants help to improve breastfeeding practices and increase breastfeeding success rates.

By supporting and offering training to other health professionals – pediatricians, gynecologists, midwives, nurses, etc. – the overall level of lactation care changes and becomes of higher quality.

IBCLC Lactation Consultants work around the world in various work settings: in hospitals, clinics, maternity hospitals, medical centres, private practices – but also autonomously.

When they work in hospitals, they help them to become Baby Friendly Hospitals, in accordance with UNICEF guidelines.

IBCLC Lactation Consultants have the specific knowledge, excellent skills and sound professional attitude to provide quality, theoretical and practical help, support and assistance to babies and mothers to enable them to breastfeed.

What is your approach to the challenges of mothers?

I try to meet every mother I meet where she is and together we can find the solutions that will give her the experience she wants. I start by listening to her very carefully and paying attention to her need, her baby’s need and of course the surrounding framework of support (or lack of support). I then suggest solutions and ideas that I believe can help her and we try techniques until we find what works best at that particular time. Together we make a plan for the next step with her baby.

What can we do together?

I can help you with qualified support services such as:

  • Breastfeeding preparation and establishment.
  • Coping with challenges
  • Returning to work
  • Baby and maternal nutrition
  • Long-term breastfeeding
  • Breastfeeding
  • Family & parenting issues

How can we meet?

I can visit you at your place, we can connect online or meet at the AMURTEL Greece NGO, located in the centre of Athens.

Who has access to your services as an IBCLC?

I find it very important to recommend an approach that recognizes family diversity so that everyone receives the best support, equal treatment, opportunity and respect. Adopting inclusive practices is vital to ensuring that every parent, despite their background or who they are, has an equal opportunity to succeed.
